About Watch Reference Numbers

What is a watch reference number?

A watch reference number (or "ref") is a unique alphanumeric code assigned by the manufacturer to identify a specific model configuration. It encodes information like the case material, dial colour, bezel type, and movement. For example, Rolex ref 126610LN refers to the Submariner Date with a black dial and black ceramic bezel in stainless steel.

Where do I find the reference number on my watch?

It's typically engraved on the caseback, between the lugs (visible when the bracelet is removed), or printed on the warranty card/papers. Some brands also display it on the dial or movement. Check your box and papers first — the reference is usually printed clearly on the warranty certificate.

How do reference number formats differ by brand?

Each brand has its own format. Rolex uses 6-digit codes (126610LN), Omega uses long dotted numbers (310.30.42.50.01.001), Patek Philippe uses a number/letter combo (5711/1A-010), and Audemars Piguet uses alphanumeric codes (15500ST.OO.1220ST.01). Our decoder handles all major formats.
